Altin Sencalar Jazz Trio
Highly trained jazz musician Altin Sencalar is taking off with his music. Between composing original music, educating the next generation, recording albums, and performing for sold out venues, Altin Sencalar remains in high demand. Altin Sencalar, a Texas native, began his musical education at the age of nine. He debuted as a performing trombonist at age 15 and continues to strive to pay homage to the music of Jazz. Altin originally began his studies on cello and quickly switched to the euphonium in middle school. After being in band for a year he heard of jazz auditions and immediately learned how to play the trombone in order to audition. Altin attended Texas State University where he studied with one of his first mentors, Freddie Mendoza. While attending Texas State University he was able to gain entrance in the thriving Austin music scene and began to emerge as a new talent. After attending Texas State University for two years, Altin then moved to Austin, TX where he attended the Butler School of Music at the University of Texas at Austin where he studied under the tutelage of Andre Hayward. While considered a top call trombonists Altin was able to perform at some of the most renowned stages that Austin has to offer like ACL Live (Austin City Limits), South by South West (SXSW), Austin City Limits Festival, the Elephant Room, the Continental Club, One World Theatre, Antones, and numerous other venues. While in Austin, Altin also became a fixture to the scene being named a “2017 top 10 Austin Music Awards horn player,” recording his debut album “Introducing Altin Sencalar”, and being recognized for his playing by Austin fixtures like Michael Mordecai, Andre Hayward, Adrian Ruiz, and many others. After graduating from the Butler School of Music he was given the opportunity to travel with the University of Texas Jazz Orchestra as a soloist to the Montreaux Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz festival, and Luxembourg Gardens in Paris, France. After graduation Altin, gained admittance to Michigan State University as the Graduate Assistant to Michael Dease and Rodney Whitaker in pursuit of his Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies. While at Michigan State University, Altin co-founded “The Sencalar/Glassman Quintet” who have been the recipients of over 3,000 dollars in funding from the East Lansing Cultural Arts FY19 Grant and the MSU Running Start grant. This grant gave the quintet the opportunity to tour all East Lansing elementary schools and use their knowledge of jazz to educate the younger generation in hopes for the students to have an artistic and creative outlet for students who may not be exposed to jazz music. While pursuing higher education Altin also gained international and national recognition being granted honors and prizes for the American Trombone Workshop jazz solo divisions, International Trombone Association’s jazz solo Carl Fontana competition and J.J. Johnson competition, the Kai Winding trombone ensemble competition, Texas State Trombone Symposium Michael Rath jazz solo competition, Yamaha Young Performing Artist, Downbeat Altin Sencalar, Professional Biography June 2019 Student Music Awards, and International Tuba-Euphonium Association Rich Matteson Jazz Euphonium competition. Altin has performed, toured, and/or recorded with DeeDee Bridgewater, Rodney Whitaker, Xaiver Davis, Teri Lynn Carrington, Christian McBride, The emptations, The Four Tops, Savion Glover, Ali Jackson, Steve Wilson, Rene Marie, Joe Jonas, Michael Dease, Steve Davis, Randy Napoleon, Andre Hayward, Diego Rivera, Etienne Charles, MSU Professors of Jazz, Brandee Younger, the Gathering Orchestra, Walter White, and many others. Altin holds a Bachelors in Music Performance (Jazz Studies) from the University of Texas at Austin and a Masters in Music Performance in Jazz Studies from Michigan State University. Altin is an artist for Earasers Earplugs and a 2017 Yamaha Young Performing Artist. Altin is currently on the music faculty at Central Texas College as Adjunct Professor of Music.02:00 PM - 05:00 PM
Jonny Gold
Saturday April 24th
Jonny is a singer-songwriter who was raised in the South Texas hill-country, in the heart of San Antone. A childhood in one of the greatest country music hubs in the world, of course lead to some of the obvious influences on their music like Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Ray Wylie Hubbard, but Jonny has never liked painting with just a few colors. Their musical tastes and influence capture anentire spectrum of sound — Tracey Chapman, Nina Simone, Ray LaMontagne, James Taylor, The War on Drugs, Dawes, and more.
Jonny’s songs are sad and sweet. With lyrics 10 layers deep, thoroughly beautiful, always with interesting plays on words, metaphors, and rhyme schemes, their songs are both hypnotic and like riddles to be puzzled over, interpreted, and re-interpreted again. Jonny’s vocals have been lauded as some of the most unique and powerful in the business. Folk music crooned to you by a strong, magnetic baritone that reaches heights, dynamics, and textures that consistently drop jaws.
